A quirky, tomboyish sixth grader, Jessie Lou Ferguson has been in love with Conrad Parker Smith for a very long time. Since second grade, in fact. But over the years, as his popularity soared (and hers dropped below sea level) any hopes she had for romance were dashed.

But sometimes fate plays surprising tricks. Conrad, the star athlete, hurts his leg, ends up in a leg brace, and needs help getting around. When Jessie Lou is assigned to help him travel to and from school, the two begin spending lots of time together.
